Mbekweni is a South African township, about 60km north of Cape Town. It suffers from a lot of social problems including domestic violence, alcohol abuse, drug addiction, high teenage pregnancy rates and child abandonment. TB is also becoming a problem and 15% of the residents live with HIV/AIDS. Despite this, Mbekweni is not a depressing place. It has a strong community spirit. On the weekends the place really buzzes. That’s when you’ll find the locals out on the streets, socialising with their friends, relatives and neighbours. People also seem happy, despite their many problems. They appreciate what little they had, rather than focusing on the things that really don’t matter in life.
